Installing & Using WordPress

Using WordPress

A CMS widely used would be WordPress. With WP you are able to maintain a website and it’s pages all under one roof. Not only that by WP has many features that you can add so your website can be as up-to-date and best as it can be.

What’s even better about this program is that within the Fantastico application (which is hosted under us in the Cpanel) you are able to upload it automatically. Something a web designer would most likely charge to upload. Once inside WordPress you are able to set up a blog that are not only categorized but also archived. Creating pages and managing them never was so easy.

Log into your Cpanel either via your IP address or yoursite.com/cpanel. Once inside locate the software/services box and click on Fantastico De Luxe. Inside on the Fantastico you will notice a long list of scripts and software available for you to use. Click on Wordpress, located right below the blogs category. After clicking, you will see the Wordpress overview page. This page is where you can install, update, and delete numerous WP accounts. Click on new installation to create a new account. You’ll notice the many boxes, you NEED to fill out all of the boxes in order for WP to continue installation. For the email with blog forms, for the box, you need to write out your user-name (ex. mainname1033) for whatever email platform you use. For the second box, you’ll need to write out the domain name for the email (ex. Yahoo.com), and for the last box, you can leave it as that. Unless you will be using this feature, it does not matter whether the email works or not, since you can change this later in your Dashboard, if need be.

Working With Wordpress

Now that you have Wordpress installed and ready to use, you’re probably stuck on how it actually works. Here is a simple walk-through, glossary if you must, on how and what everything in Wordpress means and how it can help you with your site.

Dashboard – This is the main administration (admin) area to your Wordpress account. Here is where you can view all of the latest news regarding Wordpress and your site’s activity. Within the dashboard, there are many options to which to choose from. Below I will describe each one and state its uses and functions.

Write – Clicking the Write tab will lead you to clean forms where you will write out your blogs and or site updates. Here you are able to add categories so that you can sort out your different blogs/updates.

Manage - Under the Manage tab there are a few more tab options for you to choose from.

  • Posts – Manage all of your latest and old posts, here is where you can edit or delete posts.
  • Pages – Here you can create and manage your site’s pages. This is where you will create the content of your site.
  • Uploads – Here you can manage any uploads from your computer to your Wordpress account.
  • Categories – Create or delete your categories here. You are also able to see all posts within that category.
  • Files - This online editor is only meant to be used when you don’t have access to a text editor or FTP client. So you don’t have to worry too much about it, unless you know what you are doing.
  • Import – If you have posts and comments in another system/script (ex. CuteNews) Wordpress is able to import them to your dashboard, through here.
  • Export – Wordpress will export an XML file, almost like a backup that will contain all of your posts, comments, and custom fields so that you may import it to another WP blog.

Comments – This tab will show you all comments you have received and also show you ones that are either spam or may look like spam for you to look over and check.

Blogroll – This is a list of links that you can have for either affiliates or of your favorite sites.

Presentation – One of the many grand features with WP would be their many themes that you can use for your blog/website. Since WP is such a popular CMS, many people like to make themes for others to use, that WP made a special page on their site for all of these free templates.

Plugins – On this page you are able to view all of the plug-in you have activated and uploaded. You are also able to disable any that you do not want working at the moment. The good thing about this feature, is that they are always coming up with new plug-ins for WP and they have many features that go along with this for better optimizing your website.

User – This is mainly for sites that have multiple people working on it. Here you can create and assign accounts and positions to people. You’re also able to update your personal profile here.

Options – This goes hand-in-hand with the plugin tab. Here is where you can edit all of your plugins and general Wordpress options.
