Server Abuse
Surpass Hosting is very strict when it comes to Server Abuse. When Abusers are caught their account can and most likely will be suspended without prior notice to protect other members on the same server.
There are many types of Server Abuse, the most common are listed below and will be explained in this page:
- Resource Abuse
- Software Abuse
- Content Abuse
Resource Abuse
Resource Abuse tends to be the most common type of Abuse. Resource Abuse refers to a breach of the allowable limit of resources allotted to your account. For instance, here is the allowed limits for Shared and Reseller accounts:
- Memory usage may not exceed 10% per domain/file/application
- CPU usage may not exceed 20% per domain/file/application
- Apache connections may not exceed 30 connections
- 15 MySQL maximum user connections allowed
- 350 emails per hour, per domain
The above limitations are based off of common user averages. Anything above these limits puts other customers on the same server as you in jeopardy. Your website may not bring down the whole server but it will definitely affect performance of anyone else hosted on it.
These limitations may seem insignificant at first glance but imagine what is occurring in a shared/reseller environment; if everyone is abusing the resources performance issue would be rampant.
Server Load
The main metric that determines whether or not an account should be suspended is the load of a Server (referred to as Server Load). Server Load is the percentage of CPU processing that is currently in use. When a Server’s load is above normal Surpass will investigate what is occurring and Suspend an account immediately to prevent others user from suffering.
Now if you have a Dedicated Server then the above limitations do not apply to you at all. However, there are still certain rules that everyone must follow regarding content.
Suspension Time
If your account is suspended due high CPU usage, and your site cannot be fixed by changing/removing a script (and you have declined to upgrade to a Dedicated Server) your account may remain Suspended for a 48 hour period to decrease traffic directed at your website. Based on the severity/frequency of Resource Abuse, Surpass may decline hosting your website is a Shared Environment.
Software Abuse
This section pertains to scripts/software that Surpass does not allow on a Shared Environment. If you install any of these things and are caught your account will be suspended immediately:
- Torrent Trackers/Clients
- Proxy Services
- Chat Rooms
- IRC Bots
When caught you will face a fine of no less than $50 and no more than $100 to un-suspend your account. However, if the Abuse is severe enough, your account will be deactivated.
Content Abuse
Surpass Hosting prohibits the hosting of content that you have no right to distribute (e.g. movies, videos, music, images, software, trade secrets, etc). If Surpass Hosting catches you storing such material or they receive a complaint stating that you are storing illegal material your account without a doubt will be Suspended and may be deactivated based on the severity.
Example of Content Abuse:
You own Season 1 of “The Office” and you want to host it on your account to share with your friends so they can make their own copies.
Lawsuits
You are completely liable for the content you store on your account. If the Studio that produced “The Office” wants to sue you for distributing content that you do not own, Surpass Hosting will not be on your side, and furthermore will provide the courts with your records as documentation for the case against you (in compliance with the DMCA).
